BUILDING A RESILIENT AND SUSTAINABLE

PUERTO RICO

WHY IS BIOECONOMY IN PUERTO RICO IMPORTANT?

PUERTO RICO’S SELF-SUFFICIENCY AND SUSTAINABILITY DEPEND ON ADOPTING BIOECONOMICS AS ITS FUNDAMENTAL ECONOMIC PLAN FOR THE FUTURE.

Bioeconomy has already proven successful in other parts of the world and can be applied in Puerto Rico to achieve the following goals:
  1. Improving public health by reducing pollution and exposure to harmful chemicals and promoting the use of sustainable and healthy food and products.
  2. Developing a circular economy to minimize waste and keep products and materials in use as long as possible.
  3. Creating new economic opportunities and jobs in the bioeconomy sector, including agriculture, biotechnology, and sustainable manufacturing.
  4. Increasing resilience to natural disasters and environmental challenges by implementing sustainable land and water management practices.
  5. Utilizing innovative technologies to transform bio-based materials into commercial products.
  6. Optimizing land use.
  7. Maximizing product value by reusing waste as raw material for alternate production.
  8. Promoting the use of renewable resources such as solar, wind, biogas, and water power to decrease dependence on fossil fuels and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

By implementing these principles, Puerto Rico can establish a sustainable and green economic model that benefits both the island and the environment while also increasing self-sufficiency.
